Event overview
There has been increasing concern recently around the quality of reports and information relating to the risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land, as well as the installation and verification of gas protection measures. As a result it is felt that there is now a lack of confidence within the sector in these reports and their suitability when assessing, verifying and signing-off brownfield development projects.
The issue of competency, and demonstrating competence or proving eligibility to sign-off / approve permits or reports is also an important area for review and discussion.
This session will look at the key areas of concern and the measures being proposed within the sector to address this, including reviewing the various industry accreditation schemes, their role and value in improving standards and restoring confidence, and how to improve buy-in to the schemes.

Ian Evans has over 30 years of experience in the geoenvironmental market, with a specific focus on support to land development and regeneration. Ian is Chair of the Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC) Professional Technical Panel.
Panellists:
Vivien Dent, Associate Technical Director, RSK
Vivien is a chartered hydrogeologist with over 20 years experience working in Contaminated Land in the private sector, starting her career at Soil Mechanics and then moving to STATS who were bought out by RSK in 2008. Vivien is also the current Chair of the AGS Contaminated Land Working Group whose aim is to share information, promote good practice and prepare position statements on relevant issues. Part of Vivien's role as Chair is representing the AGS on the National Brownfield Forum and NQMS Steering Group
Alistair Dick, Environmental Lead, Groundsure
Alistair has over 13 years’ experience working in the contaminated land sector with a degree in Geology and a Masters in Environmental Science. He brings with him experience of site investigation at WSP and with Mott MacDonald he worked on the Tideway super sewer project. He has worked in the Commercial Searches and Projects team with an interest in how data can be presented and interpreted to resolve client questions. He is a member of the IES and current working towards achieving Chartered status.
Sarah Hamill, Contaminated Land Officer, West Dunbartonshire Council
Sarah graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Topographic Science from Glasgow University in 1996, and started her career as a Hydrographic Surveyor in the offshore industry. Sarah then returned to university, gaining a Masters in Environmental Studies from Strathclyde University in 2002. Sarah has since been involved in contaminated land management for both the private and public sectors with experience being gained in a variety of different projects ranging from small scale desk studies/investigations to large scale residential/commercial developments and remediation projects. Sarah was appointed as the Contaminated Land Officer for West Dunbartonshire Council in 2006.
